Couach range

Over the last four decades, French boatbuilder Couach, based at Gujan-Mestras near Bordeaux, has delivered more than 200 Plascoa patrol boats and interceptors to navies and security forces around the world. Today, Couach’s Plascoa high-speed interceptors are a global benchmark.

The company’s patrol boats range from 11 to 17m in length and boast top speeds in excess of 50kts. Propulsion options include petrol outboards and inboard  diesels powering surface propellers or waterjets. All offer excellent manoeuvrability and seakeeping thanks to their deep-V hulls made from a Kevlar, fibreglass and carbon fibre composite. These tough boats also feature bulletproof glazing and armour-protected super-structures made of polyethylene fibre. The larger models can be equipped with a RHIB and a 30mm remotely operated machine gun.

In 2018 the company completed work on a huge contract to build 79 type 1650 FIC interceptors for the Saudi Coast Guard. The first boats were delivered within 12 months of signing the agreement in 2015. The entire programme was completed on time and without a single defect being detected in the course of acceptance testing.

Type 1650 FIC interceptors are based on the 1300 FIC, 15 of which were delivered to the Indian Navy in 2011 and 2012. The highly successful 1300 FIC and its derivatives are designed for the surveillance and protection of maritime approaches and strategic assets, including naval bases and harbour and port facilities. The Indian Navy’s type 1300 FIC boats protect Mumbai harbour, its extensive roads and approaches, and the city’s port facilities.

Couach recently added the PL1400 FIC to its range. With a top speed of 55kts and armed with a 12.7mm machine gun, this model is ideal for coastal surveillance and interception.

The company has also developed a 12m outboard-powered multimission platform dubbed the Wasp. While the hull and outboards are based on proven designs, the deck plan can be tailored to the client’s needs or specific missions. The Wasp has a top speed of 60kts and comes in two versions, open or with an enclosed and air-conditioned wheelhouse. It can also accommodate a wide range of equipment including a 12.7 or 30mm machine gun.
